After working in the art world during the early 80's, I became disillusioned with art making, and the business, and politics of it. I couldn't see the point of making art anymore. So, I concentrated on making a living as a graphic designer. After landing at the California Academy of Sciences in 1989, I had the opportunity to tour then East Mojave National Monument on a two week naturalist led camping trip. In those two weeks, I fell in love with the desert and the environment. Thinking that I'd be bored in a dried out wasteland, I packed some watercolors and paper. After making camp the second day, I started to paint in my new sketchbook. After a nearly 10-year hiatus, I absolutely revelled in the abundance of blossoming life forms. Everywhere I looked, bouquets of wildflowers were blooming. I painted for the sake of painting. And I couldn't stop. Everything I saw, I saw with new eyes. It was a rebirth of my own spirit after a self-imposed exile to its own desert. I've been to the California and Arizona deserts often since. These days, I keep to painting what moves me. I don't try to keep up with the newest trend in the art world. It usually has little to do with what I want or need to make. As a result, I haven't had time to do all of the paintings that I have been inspired to do. My long drought is over -- thanks to the desert -- and my interest in working to conserve and protect wild lands is at the heart of it. |
