My painter friend, Alkmeme Bandar, took me out to the palm tree grove the very first day we painted together. I told her that the foliage on palm trees was intimidating to me and that I wouldn't know how to paint them. So she said, "Look at how Winslow Homer painted palm trees in Jamaica. You've got to resist trying to draw the tree with a paint brush. It won't work. Use the gesture of the palms, and use the biggest brush you brought with you." So I did.
