This little painting of a path in Golden Gate Park's Rhododendron Dell was the first one I did that seemed to me to capture the cool quality of the light in a once very shady part of the park. I painted it in two sittings, about an hour each. In early March, when the weather is still wet, the rhododendrons, along with foxglove, are the first flowers to bloom and thus, harkening Spring. Sadly, many of the older gnarled shrubs have sunburned and are struggling to survive due to loss of shade once provided by trees that have been removed. New pine trees have been planted to replace 100-year old diseased trees. But they grow so slowly. It will be some time before the cool shade, much needed by rhododendrons, returns to the dell. |
